Middle East:
Yards Featured:
Platinum Yachts, IGY, Abu Dhabi Mar, Aldar, Al Seer Marine, Paul Alan
Contributor: Tork Buckley
Synopsis: Before the Superyacht cup in Palma the last stop on my World Tour was in the UAE. I had the chance to visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi – two places of greater contrast both superficially and in depth than one might expect. All at once complicated, unexpected and expected, the state of the superyacht industry in the region (and indeed the economy in the UAE) is far from simple.

Synopsis: All things considered a majority of new build shipyards in the UK are still in a growth period and are receiving plenty of new business; this can be seen with their new orders – especially with the likes of Sunseeker – and the new ventures, such as Palmer Johnson starting to build in Hythe and Southampton. On the down side, Devonport – one of the main UK players – has announced their plans to cease superyacht production after completing their current projects, as you’ll read below. Is this a sign of the times ahead for the UK and international shipyards or just a tiny blip in the grand scheme of the superyachting world?

Over the last decade China and Taiwan have cemented their places amongst the top ten of superyacht building nations, with Horizon and Ocean Alexander consistently placed amongst the world’s most prominent shipyards. This report on the state of the emerging Asian markets is split into three sections. The first a comprehensive introduction to the region by Adrien Magnan, of Marine Dragon consulting, explores the factors that have lead to the exponential growth in superyacht orders seen across Asian countries from China to Vietnam. He explains how low labour costs, improving brand reputations and cheaper raw materials are closing the production gap between the established European yards and the leading Asian competitors. He also explores how the future looks increasingly bright, despite the economic slowdown in America, with the rampant rise in personal wealth leading to a boom in homegrown consumers. The second section looks individually at the continents main yards and examines their recent build histories, facilities and predictions for future growth. The final section is a set of comprehensive interviews with five highly respected industry figures. Exploring a diverse range of issues from build quality to geographical location, the worldwide economic slowdown to the constraints in the supply chain – we find a market full of optimism for the future, but still coming to terms with its new found position at the forefront of global superyacht production.
This report is definitive reading for those interested in the ability of emerging manufacturers to challenge the established status quo of the European and American markets.

Synopsis: Whilst they lack the build numbers of Italy, the GTs of the German gigas or the perceived ‘pedigree’ of Holland – French and Spanish yards continue to produce major and award-winning builds, whilst remaining amongst the world’s primary refit bases. In this report Tork Buckley, editor of The Yacht Report analyses both the French and Spanish markets, through a detailed examination of the major shipyards in each country. Starting in France he looks at how working practices and expensive labour costs are inhibiting the potential growth of several yards – but also sees how massive increases in refit activity is leading to a consolidated movement towards this specialisation. The second half of the narrative concentrates on Spain, a country that has seemingly embraced the model of refit yards – whilst at the same time fostering a sustainable new build sector. Drawing on the opinions of several notable business leaders from both countries, the report finishes by detailing the opportunities and threats that exist to both sectors – detailing how market growth is leading to inward investment in these two geographical significant superyacht hubs.

Synopsis: Whilst the superyacht industry in the Southern Hemisphere is comparatively young – it has over the past 25 years developed a reputation for excellence and quality. This regional report focuses on the enduring appeal of yachts produced ‘down under’ where the yachting is amongst the best in the world. In the first section Editor-in-Chief of The Yacht Report, Martin Redmayne, explains his enduring love of New Zealand yacht building by exploring how a small number of yards have consistently delivered ground breaking and innovative designs. Touring Alloy Yachts, he discovers that rapid expansion and bulging order books are being threatened by the migration of skilled labourers to Australia. He goes on to visit the countries most prominent shipyards including YDL and Fitzroy Yachts, gaining unprecedented exposure to their order books, and finds that whilst each yard has their own views on expansion – the future is full of opportunities, for a country that consistently delivers yachts of the highest pedigree. The second section, narrated by David Robinson, says that when it comes to its superyachts, Australia has no simpler strategic objective than to attract as many of them to its waters as it can! In a comprehensive critique he examines this unique approach by visiting Australia’s premier yards and finds an industry struggling to keep up with its potential. Highlighting the growth in refit facilities, marina projects and ancillary suppliers – he paints a portrait of a country trying to rapidly position itself at the centre of pacific and global yachting. The final section is a set of comprehensive interviews with seven highly respected industry figures. Exploring amongst other issues, market growth, sustainable resources, government intervention and the global labour shortage – the responses represent the opinions of the business leaders at the forefront of what is a rapidly expanding and undoubtedly important market.

The second section is a set of comprehensive interviews with four highly respected industry figures.
